Hi roseannetsullivan.
First, try to reset Apple Mail by booting the Mac Into Safe-Mode one time.
Shut down the Mac and disconnect any peripherals such as printers, external disk drives, graphics tablets etc then restart the Mac, as soon as you press the power button to restart hold down and keep depressed the keyboard shift key until you see the on-screen message "Safe-Mode" or are asked to log-in.
During a Safe-Mode start-up you may be asked to log-in more than once.
A Safe-Mode restart is very slow, please be patient while the Mac is booting to your user desktop, this may take ten minutes or so to reach.
After your user desktop is presented just leave the Mac alone for at least ten minutes while the hidden start-up tasks that run in the background have time to complete and then shut down the Mac, do not interact with the Mac while in Safe Mode or try to use any apps, this Safe-Mode start-up will clear and reset many macOS and application caches that may be responsible for Mac Mail not working as expected.
After the desktop has been visible for at least ten minutes in Safe-Mode then select the Restart... option to boot the Mac into Normal-Mode.
After the Mac is ready test Mac Mail again and see if the send button is restored.
If there is no change then restart the Mac in Recovery-Mode and select the option to re-install the macOS.
Re-installing the macOS will automatically install a new copy of the Mac Mail App at the same time as installing a clean operating system, while keeping your data and applications intact, but as always, please be sure to have a Time Machine backup on a dedicated external disk before carrying out a macOS re-install just in case the process fails and leaves your personal data and apps unreadable. With a Time Machine backup you can restore all your personal data and apps after a clean install of the macOS on your machine.

Booting into Safe Mode is extremely easy. Just hold down the Shift key and start the iMac. Keep holding it down until the progress bar appears on the screen.
Note: if you have a rechargeable wireless keyboard connect it with it's charging cable for this operation.
Do you mean the Paper Airplane icon at the top of the window when composing a new eMail
Thanks. That is beyond my capability. I did upgrade to Monterey
but the problem still exists.
Yes, the paper airplane has been missing for about a week.
I can't do all the rest, including detaching things. That's what I mean. I appreciate your advice. But.
