Contacts appearing multiple times
why all of a sudden are my contacts appearing multiple times, as many as 5 times also they now seem to be under both first name and surname, what can I do to rectify this

You may have the same contacts in multiple email accounts. Either remove the contacts from the rarely used email account or disable contacts from the rarely used mail account in the Mail app.
