I am trying to optimise storage of my MacBook Air to iCloud. From the recommendations list I select iCloud I then select optimise the button changes to a loading circle and within a few seconds it’s back to saying optimise and nothing has happened am I missing something or doing something wrong?

We see that you're currently trying to optimize storage. Optimize storage space on your Mac may help out as well. Have you checked the actual storage as well to see if the size is different?

If you goal is to free up storage space on your Mac then get an external drive and move some data to it. You can't free up local Mac storage using iCloud.
