I have an iPad model ##A1474 - it won’t auto update to iOS 14 from iOS 12.5.5 is it too old too update ?

Yes. An unit running 12.5.5 isn't capable of 13 or above.

This iPad is a 2013 iPad Air 1st generation. It is almost a 8-1/2-year old device.
