Mac Photos Albums syncing incorrect images randomly.

I have a large Photos Library on my Mac (16,000+). Many images are sorted into Albums.

When I sync all Photos to my iPhone, all of the images are transferred and all Albums from my Mac are visible.

Some of the images in the synced Albums are incorrect. The majority are okay, but a few photos are randomly changed to images from different albums.

This has only happened recently. I have tried removing all photos and resyncing, and even a full reset of the phone. Some photos, seemingly at random, change each time.

I am using a MacBook Pro 16-inch & iPhone 12 Pro Max, both with latest OS updates.

How are you syncing? Are you using iCloud Photos or are you syncing using the Finder?

Are the incorrectly synced photos in the albums problematic in other ways? Can you edit them? can you export the originals with "File > Export > Export unmodified original"?

The sync is happening via Finder.

The photos are all my own photos, just a few of them appear randomly in the wrong album. For example, the first 30 or so images match exactly, then the next image is swapped for another image randomly, on my iPhone only. The next photo may be fine, or it may also be swapped. It seems like around 2-5% of images in an album are randomly incorrect. But which 2-5% are random, and which images are displayed in place of the actual one also appears to be random.

Example: I have an album called “memes.” This album contains memes I save from various websites and social media. Whether I save them to my Camera Roll or to my Mac, I soon after import all the new photos from iPhone to my Mac Photos library, deleting the originals. I will then add any imported memes to my “memes” album. The album is correct on my Mac. But on my iPhone, the randomly swapped images may be a photo I’ve taken, or an image from any other random album I’ve saved.
