Recently my iphone has begun saving my screenshots so that when I open my "recents" file on my macbook, they all appear there. There are no other photos, just screenshots saved as either pdfs or jpegs. How can I stop this? I don't want all my random screenshots to appear on my macbook like that.

This may be because you've configured iCloud Photos on the Mac. Try turning this off in Photos Preferences (on the Mac) to see if this makes any difference.
I'm surprised that you say that the screenshots are showing up in Recents. It may actually be related to Use Universal Clipboard to copy and paste between your Apple devices.

Thanks- I do want my photos to be stored in the cloud, though. My photos seem to be behaving as usual, it's just screenshots. As you suggested I checked the handoff settings and nothing I've set up there has changed lately- I do use that feature a lot so I don't want to disable it if I don't have to.
