Can't restore from Time Machine

Recently my MB Pro has begun to behave erratically (names in my Messages app are now only numbers, individual notes in the Notes app disappeared), so I tried to restore an earlier version from Time Machine. But RESTORE is greyed out. I've run Disk Utility on both my MBP and on my backup disk, and that didn't help.

Might updating to a newer operating system possibly help, or (if Ive been hacked) will it only compound the problem(s)?

Not sure what to try.

Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
