parental consent with credit card error - done button greyed out

I have tried adding my son to our Apple ID family probably 100 times on several different devices. Practically the first step is to give parental consent with a credit card. I have entered the credit card information, expiration date, billing name, address and phone number but the done button on the top is greyed out. I have entered all of the information on the page, why can I not just click done, and continue to set up my son's ID? This has been a HUGE pain, I am extremely frustrated. I did not have any issues a couple of year's ago when I set up my other children's accounts. If anyone knows how to continue the set up, I would appreciate it. OR if I can set up using a chrome browser I would be willing to try that too! I have already tried that by starting in my Apple ID, but it only lists my family and does not give an option to add anyone.

Alright, I had this issue and it was super frustrating. Like throw the new iPad Mini for my daughter's 10th birthday against the wall frustrating. I've entered every credit card I own and the "done" button does not abide (ha, the Big Lebowski). I thought if I entered the Apple Mastercard CC it would abide. Nope.

So thankfully I have another apple device (iPhone 12 Pro) and I was able to add my daughter to my family via settings and family sharing (not your Apple ID as you noted above ... go to Family Sharing). I could then log into her iPad Mini and completely avoid this obviously very broken step in the set-up. Of course, per Apple's usual, they wont help you figure this out ... probably because it just works. Unless it doesn't and then you're out of luck. Apple is notorious for terrible non-error codes and you just have to wander your way through every obstacle.

I'm now experiencing network connectivity issues with iCloud, which trucks up the fingerprint reader. We are now redoing the fingerprint for my 10 year old so she can IDK download apps, which apparently requires her fingerprint authorization for reasons I dont understand. I'm beginning to think this iPad Mini at $500 large is half baked. I'm sure once we get over these hurdles it will be awesome, but it's sort of ruining her birthday. She now doesn't want to use her new toy and would rather play "It Takes Two" with me instead. Could have saved $500 ...

I'll revisit if you have further questions, but this worked for me.

Good luck,

SM

idk_tid_,

Thanks for the screenshots to show your path. It helps.

We'd suggest trying to add a different payment method: Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods. Let's see if trying to modify or change the method you're currently using helps you add your son.

If it doesn't, you'd want to Contact Apple Support. They'd be able to assist you by checking over your account and Family Sharing information to get this resolved for you.

Kind regards.

Oh, I will note that she had a gmail email address that I set up long ago for other reasons. No CC needed for her setup via the iPhone 12 Pro. It skips that step in the setup but you'll need access to her (his) email address because it sends a code that you have to enter. My point being that because you go through your account on your phone (or other device) it skips the CC step and then you can log into the iPad or whatever. I assume it thinks it's legit because a CC is already associated with whatever device is doing the family sharing. Set the password there and then you just log in with her iCloud account (email - gmail above - and password you configure via family sharing after you enter the code that is sent to her/his email) and it works.

Hey there, idk_tid_!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! From your post, it sounds like you're having difficulty adding your son to Family Sharing and using Ask to Buy.

We realize you've tried so many times already but we wanted to back up and make sure your son is added correctly to your family group. Let's start here: Create an Apple ID for your child. We're sharing this to make sure the settings are correct.

If you're the family organizer, you credit information is already associated with your account. You'd want to turn on Ask to Buy: Approve what kids buy with Ask to Buy. Again, we're sharing this to have you check the settings.

You've mentioned that you're unable to add anyone to your family group. There are limits to the total amount of people that can be added. You'd want to see if anyone has been pending for a while, remove them then try to add your son.

Let us know if this helped.

Please try to create an underage family member on your family. The first thing it asks you to do is “provide parental consent” to do that they use a credit card to verify your identity. At this point the new ID hasn’t even been created yet, let alone get as far as ask to buy. I added step by step pictures of what I see when trying to set it up

Nope. I contacted support, I was put on hold so the situation could be discussed with a supervisor and after 5 minutes on hold, I was hung up on. I ended up just using another kid’s Apple ID I had set up years ago. Someday I hope to be able to get one for my son, but I’m done wasting hours of my time trying to figure it out and just getting hung up on.
