M1 Mac desktop 2021 feels warm

Hello,

I purchased the new M1 Mac desktop last year and it runs great...today I am working on it, and the front where all of the components are, feels warm. This is the first time I've noticed this and am not sure if it's something I should be concerned about, or if it's normal. Not sure how to kick the fan on, or if it will go on automatically. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

iMac 24″, macOS 12.1

I'd say that is normal.

The fan is on a thermostatic controller. If sensors built into the logic board and components detect temps above a certain point, the fan will start up.

It is normal for computers to feel warm with normal use. Depending on the task, "how warm" can range from not noticeable (doing email of word processing) to quite noticeable ( gaming, video-conferencing, and streaming video). Even some web sites use a lot of resources, increasing the workload enough to make the computer feel warm. The computer will save itself if in danger.

Remember: the new 1/4-inch/6mm thickness of the new iMacs puts the components much closer to the case surfaces than in previous designs. That makes normal heat more noticeable but not dangerous.
