Is FileVault tied to prior iCloud address?

When I set up my 2020 MacBook air, I said Yes to turn on FileVault and elected to use my iCloud account (call it "old iCloud") to unlock. I have since changed my apple ID and icloud address (call it "new") on my MacBook. Is FileVault still tied back to the "old iCloud" or does it somehow know to update to the "new"?

Hey there, java4me!

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! If we understand correctly, you're looking for information regarding your Apple ID and FileVault on your Mac. We'd like to lend a hand!

Since the answer to this question might change next steps, can you confirm if you changed the Apple ID email or did you create a new Apple ID? If you changed the Apple ID email, this will not be updated with FileVault. If you changed the Apple ID only, then you'll still use the password for this account with FileVault.

thank for the reply. let me provide a bit more information. when i setup the MacBook, I had a yahoo email address as my Apple ID (for purchases etc) and an iCloud.com address for iCloud activity. what I changed was to use my yahoo address for iCloud activity, so that this yahoo address would be used for all things Apple. my apple ID remain unchanged. so if I understand you response correctly, what I did was change the email, which would NOT be updated with FileVault - correct?

i have read elsewhere that an approach i could take would be to turnoff FileVault (and unencrypted my HD) and then turn FileVault back on and when prompted select use iCloud and then it will be tied to my now current iCloud yahoo email address. Does this sound correct?
