How do I use Files to search for a file name or part of a file name within a folder on iPad?

I don’t know why this is so hard. I am looking at a folder of song PDFs in the Files App on iPad. I wanted to search for a few files by file name or file name contains a string, but anything I put in the search line returns 0 results. I am looking at the file list in Files right at some songs that start with “ALL “ including blanks in the file name, but if I put ALL or all, or really any character in the search string, I get 0 results. This is a connected Dropbox folder, but I get 0 results if I chose any of the three tabs at the top, recent, dropbox, or file name.

Search for a file name seems to work better for “On my iPad, iCloud, but not for Google Drive, or Dropbox. If I search all of my Dropbox for the character “A”, I get one hit, a file named “DEATH OF A SALEMAN____stevegoodman”, a PDF that doesn’t start with an A, and isn’t downloaded, so I am puzzled by the logic of this search.

I screen captured a video of what I am getting here, but didn’t know if I could attach it here or leave a link.

Carefully examine the display when you do the Files search. It should clarify exactly what is being searched.

If Files doesn’t find this external stuff (that I have never personally attempted to use with Files), try this search instead.

Ah, that does make sense. I’ve never actually tried, as iCloud is the only cloud service I use to store files. Thanks for the added knowledge!

By the way, I wonder if Spotlight would find it …

Either way, your suggestion of using Dropbox directly does seem best.

I don't think Files can or actually will search Files directly in a cloud service. At least I can't get it to find anything on OneDrive, and I assume it's the same for Dropbox. I think its an actual limitation and not just an issue with your search terms.

You should be able to search for things in Dropbox directly in the Dropbox App however.

Hmm, OK, I think a new service just was introduced into the discussion.

We had been discussing Dropbox and iCloud Drive. Now you mentioned Microsoft’s OneDrive. I guess you’re implying OneDrive and Dropbox should behave the same with respect to Spotlight, which seems reasonable. But apparently you’re saying they behave differently with respect to doing Files searches. Anyway, life is complicated.
