Apple Watch Series 5 dies during run

This has happened several times in the last 2 weeks now. -My watch says I have 70-80% battery - I start my run, listening to podcast through watch and AirPods and watch shuts down saying 10% battery then it restarts and shows low battery signal and time. I can’t get to the Home Screen and when I restart it is gives me the reserve power display. When I get home and plug the watch on charger and it shows 50-70% battery right away.

I run with Strava and listen to podcasts or music and have done so hundreds of times until these past few weeks when I started having this problem. Is this a software issue? Hardware? All apps, iOS, watch are up to date.

I completely wiped and reset the watch, but that didn’t work.

Battery health shows it as 82% - this issue is still recurring. It happens when I’m running with Strava and listening to podcast. Most recently, I had started a run with 100% battery, and within 40 minutes the watch restarted and then said battery low 10%. I restarted the watch 4 times and then it shows 78%, started running then it shut off again, restarted, then shows 10%.

I get home, plug it in and it shows 70%.

the watch ONLY does this when I run - on normal wear I never have issues with battery life.

To understand Apple Watch performance and its relation to your battery, see:

Apple Watch - Battery - Apple

Apple Watch Battery and Performance - Apple Support

“Battery life” is the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged. “Battery lifespan” is the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced. Maximize both and you’ll get the most out of your Apple devices, no matter which ones you own. See the "Tips for Apple Watch" section in:

Batteries - Maximizing Performance - Apple

If the battery drains too fast after an update, see all the replies to:

Battery Drain since watchos 7.4 - Apple Community

WatchOS 7.5 battery drain - Apple Community

FWIW, in some cases, unpairing the watch, completely erasing it, then pairing and restoring the backup will resolve the battery draining issue after an update. (Simply unpairing and pairing again may not work.)

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Also, some people have found that simply waiting a few days after an update resolves the battery draining problem.
