M1 Mac Mini + USB-C Monitor Issues

I'm going crazy here...

I have an M1 Mac Mini at the office connected to a LG Ultrafine 32UN880-B 4K through USB-C (using the cable that came with the monitor for that purpose).

It works fine, until it stops working after a computer restart. Every once in a while, I try again, it works for a while or a few days until it doesn't anymore. If I connect through HDMI I can use the monitor again but I lose all USB hub capabilities. I haven't found the pattern that makes the USB-C connection work again... just happens randomly sometimes.

I have used the same Mac Mini with a different LG monitor (27") and I haven't experienced any issues, and I have used the same monitor with a 2019 Macbook Pro through USB-C without issues either.

What am I doing wrong? How can something work sometimes and not other? How can I make the Mac Mini and the 32" LG monitor work all the time? Thank you so much!

For additional information, both computers are running last version of Mac OS but this issue has been ongoing since previous updates. I was actually hoping that a OS update would fix the issue, but no luck.

Mac mini, macOS 12.1

Direct USB-C to USB-C for monitor to Macs doesn’t work very well because monitors are clueless on what’s connected, a power-hungry laptop or power rebuffing desktop. I would connect the monitor’s USB C to the mini’s USB-A port using suitable C-A adapter/cable to enable hub functions. For video, use HDMI-HDMI with a cable not longer than 5’. Good luck!

I have a similar issue using a Dell U2722DE monitor where the USB C works fine for several weeks and suddenly will drop the display signal. The other built in hub connected devices continue to work without issue. I have have swapped like displays and get the same result, and swapped out USB C cables without success. Odd that it works for an extended time and suddenly drops the display signal. Interestingly the display also has a detachable speaker and the M1 Mac Mini sometimes connects and other times it does not even though it is showing up in the Stem preference panel.

So it is not unique to your system, and it will be interesting to see how many more run into this problem.

Ah, less informed for sure. Both monitors are working just fine with the Surface laptop using a USB C cable. Here is the USB C specification in case you would like to improve your knowledge: https://www.usb.org/sites/default/files/USB%20Type-C%20Spec%20R2.0%20-%20August%202019_0.pdf

Also feel free to check out the M1 Mini specification that clearly indicates the USB C capability to support a monitor. So yes, it is defective.

Cheers

A defect is a defect. Yes, a workaround is changing over to HDMI, yet use of a USB C cable to drive a display is commonplace and reliable on many computers. Plus, the point is to support video and data simultaneously. Standards are developed and used across the industry to ensure uniformity. It’s clear the in this case that the M1 Mini has a defect in implementing the standard. Advice to just live with it is tosh.
