Thanks for the input, Viking OSX. It gives more options in typing superscripts and subscripts.
After posting the question, I found, by experimenting, that I can get the proper subscript size by using \mathrm instead of \text. For instance, with \text, labelling the intensity of solar radiation at distance 1 AU as "I_\text{1AU}," yields the subscript in full-size font. But then using \mathrm, that is "I_\mathrm{1AU}", results in the subscript being in proper subscript-size font.

Get a copy of the blahtex translator PDF from Apple's About LaTeX and MathML support in Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and iBooks Author. This dictates what content can be entered.
You can make different sizes of numeric superscripts for comparison by entering:
\textrm{A¹}\textrm{A}^1
The first is my opening the Emojis & Symbols panel (control+cmd+spacebar) and entering the word super in the search box. I then position the insertion point after the first A and double-click the superscript 1 on the previous panel to insert it into the equation editor.
There is no provision for reducing the font size of non-numeric superscripts in the equation editor.
Since one cannot load LaTeX packages into the equation editor the ability to tune the font and font-size metrics is unavailable via blahtex.
Errata: For subscripts, enter subscript in the Emojis & Symbols panel or replace the ^ character with an underscore '_' .
