An iPad passcode cannot be recovered, reset or modified from another device.

iPadOS 15.2 or later with a forgotten Passcode

Apple has introduced a new procedure with which to reset an iPad or iPhone with a forgotten Passcode - allowing you to use your AppleID and associated Password to reset your device.

How to reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when you forgot your passcode - Apple Support

You will be able to restore data from a pre-existing iCloud backup without the use of a computer, but will require a PC/Mac to restore data from an iTunes backup.

iPadOS 15.1 and earlier - and all devices that are Disabled

If your iPad is disabled, or you have forgotten your iPad passcode, you have no alternative other than to follow this process:

You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS).

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iTunes – Apple Support

Use of a PC or Mac is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store will be delighted to assist.

If your iPad is not recognised by your computer when connected, try using a different USB port. If you continue to have connection difficulties, this support page may help with troubleshooting:

You may also need your AppleID and associated password. If these have also been forgotten, they can be recovered here:

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.

Given that to remove the existing passcode you must connect your device via USB to a computer (a Windows PC running the latest iTunes version, or a Mac, which can run iTunes or Finder, depending on the macOS installed on it), pay attention to the specific gestures that you need to perform while connecting your device to the computer.

These are the instructions to re-gain access to your iPhone/iPad:

If it is an iPhone:--> If you forgot your iPhone passcode - Apple Support

If it is an iPad:--> If you forgot the passcode on your iPad, or your iPad is disabled - Apple Support

The update notification indicates that the iPad2 is not running the most recent version of iOS supported by the iPad - which, for a WiFi Only iPad2 (obsolete) is iOS 9.3.5.

As described, the iPad may be unrecoverable. Unless you are able to resolve the issue with the guidance already provided, you may have exhausted your available options.

Whether or not you manage to resolve your immediate problem, you need to consider that compatible Apps for your iPad2 are increasingly difficult to find - as most developers have dropped support for 32-bit devices and iOS versions preceding iOS11/12/13. Most (if not all) Apps that are compatible with very old 32-bit devices have long ago been removed from the Apple App Store.

Recovery of the iPad, if successful, will fully erase any data and Apps from the iPad. Gifting a long-obsolete iPad may not be helpful to the recipient. As older versions of Apps are removed from the Apple App Store, you’ll not be able to (re)download or install them - which will severely limit the usefulness and utility of the iPad. As such, if you want or need to access most current Apps, requiring more recent versions of iOS, you’ll need to consider replacement of the iPad with a newer or current model.
