Mail going to wrong mailbox

I use Gmail thru the Apple Mail system. I have an inbox and numerous sub mailboxes. I have set up rules on a number of them. I am finding an unusual amount of mail (both incoming and outgoing) going to a sub mailbox I call "Taxes". I have reviewed each Rule under preferences and can find no rule that ever uses Taxes. How can I stop mail from going there and yet still retain the mailbox so that I can store related Taxes messages there?

Did you create the rules in the mail app on your Mac, or on the gmail web site?

I'm guessing the rule is set up on the gmail server, not your Mac.
