ALL of the first gen iPhones are locked to AT&T. AT&T didn't unlock them.

The 2G (EDGE) network is now gone. Has been for a while as has already been pointed out.

That device is effectively worthless as anything other than a paper-weight, and I honestly wouldn't want something with a Lithium-ion battery in it sitting around unused like that for any significant amount of time... Those batteries do bad things when they fail.

Recycle it.

If you bought it in the U.S., it is probably locked to AT&T. If you did manage to get it to function, it can only update up to iOS 3.1.3. You're not going to find much in the App Store that will run on iOS 3. When iOS 6 was released, developers lost the ability to make their apps compatible with anything older than iOS 4.3.

My original iPhone is sitting here on my desk, still with its inactive AT&T SIM. Takes several hours to charge and will run for about 4 minutes on battery. AT&T shut down their 2G network in 2016.
