IPhone7 Carrier Lock

Hi I recently got an Iphone7 from my sister who has upgraded and we are on different carriers (my AT&T simm card is incompatible with the phone because she was activated on the Verizon network) .. Is there a way fr me to upgrade the device so that it will work with my AT&T simm card ? Thanks in advance

I was told by a verizon associate that that phone I want to upgrade to said carrier lock. Can I switch to this phone I was given an unlocked Iphone but the user has a differnt carrier, so the Verizon associate told me the phone is carrier locked, that I need to contact apple or the previous carrier.
