Mac Mini and Kensington Track Ball Pro still freezing on Apple12.1

I have a new Kensington Track ball Pro which freezes the pointer when left alone with Apple 12.1. Responsiveness can be restored by unplugging and reconnecting the Track Ball USB cable from the Mac Mini so I suspect the problem is not huge, but the problems seems to be rattling around for the last year or more. The cursor simply stops responding, seemingly after having left at idle for a short time. Can someone not add a reset loop or some such?? I am going to wear out a USB socket if this keeps up.

Is this connected in a hub? Monterey does not play well with hubs. Plug it into the computer. Check to see if there is an update to the firmware or driver at Kensington.

Hi, ronaldfromoak ridge, maybe I can help you. I have the same problem, too, and I'm on Mojave....about the only thing I could suggest is that you download the latest version of KensingtonWorks, maybe do a reset smc/pmu and zap pram 3-4 times on your Mac Mini and see if that fixes the problem.....the latest version of KensingtonWorks, which works with Big Sur (*MacOS 11) is available here: https://www.kensington.com/en-ca/software/kensingtonworks/

I wrote this because most of the posting seem to be wrapped around 11. x so I wanted to update the issue to 12.1 which I have. It is relatively easy to fix as I found out that simply pulling and immediately replugging the TrackBall USB plug from the Mini sets things right without going through a reboot. It seems like the trackball gets cut out of the loop when the system has a moment to ramp up something in background, thus the unplug and replug set the Mini to checking who it has unplugged, which it then fixes. I have just installed this track ball a week or so back and have downloaded the s/w twice but the problem persist.

As for how long is "left alone"

Usually an hour or so, even over night (I most always use sleep mode rather than off mode to let the background work continue). Today I did notice it locked up once when it had only been left for perhaps 20 minutes while I attended to another matter not using the computer.

I'll see what I can do about disabling the computer sleep function, which might be ok for troubleshooting but seems like a throwaway as a fix. It would be easier to cut the power wire and insert a push button I think. I love writing software when I can stick with it but as they say "when you find yourself in hole, .... stop digging" which is me and s/w usually.

No, I am not using a hub, nor a dangle. I chose a WIRED trackball because I have noticed a tendency of bluetooth overload with other equipment. The trackball is a "wired" trackball connected directly to one of the USB ports on my Mac Mini as is my keyboard. As stated earlier I have tried two downloads from the Kensington web site in the last couple of weeks. Both behave very well except the cursor hangs. The four buttons appear to work just fine and all work with combo inputs from the keyboard and the track ball such as switching from scroll to zoom by holding down the CTL key.
