I havent used my iMac for about a year and now it will not boot up. I have tried most of the "hold that button down for 10 seconds" tricks but to no joy.

Try repeating steps 1-3 of what BDAqua suggested. Then plug the power cable back into your iMac. Make sure that your keyboard & mouse are the only peripherals connected to your iMac. Then press the power button ONCE & let go. Wait a second or two. Then press the power button a second time & let go. See if that does the trick.

I have had a few iMacs that required 2 presses of the power button before they would start up. Even the one I'm using right now requires that every time I start up.
