Battery suddenly says 'replace now'.

My MacBook Pro is suddenly not charging and says 'Replace Battery Now'. I've had no recent problems with the battery.

It has a Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3925 and a Cycle Count:of 389

I believe it was fully charged when I left the house. I was riding around on my bike a lot today and didn't use the computer. The temp here was around 10C.

I tried resetting the SMC but nothing changed.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

Batteries are considered Consumable Products. Over time it will degrade to a point where it needs to be replaced. The usage is normal as the capacity will go up and down all the time and never stay always at 100%. Apple Batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles and / or 80% Capacity before needing Evaluation or replacement.

Thanks for responding. I had read what you posted.

Your post begins by talking about batteries being consumable products and mentions that Apple batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles. In my post, I mentioned that my battery has a Cycle Count:of 389. So, I don't think it's a case of degradation over normal usage.

When I left the house the battery was fully charged. When I returned home, having not used the computer, the battery was completely empty and saying 'Replace Now'. It has never said 'Replace Soon'.

Battery can and do fail out right and some times without any warning.

It can happen to a battery 389 Full Cycles as it can happen to a battery with just about any number of Full Cycles.

One has done a good job by SMC Reset.

Was the Reset done 3 time consecutively and until the Third Bong Sound occurred..

"Replace Now" indicates the battery capacity has decreased to a point most users will not be happy using the laptop on battery power (maybe just one or two hours at most --- likely less). If you are Ok with the battery's current performance, then ignore this condition until you are unhappy with the Battery's performance. If the condition changes to "Service Battery", then this indicates macOS has detected a hardware issue with the battery which should probably be replaced by Apple or an AASP.

FYI, later versions of macOS will only show "Normal" or "Service Recommended". The latter corresponds to the "Service Battery", "Replace Now", and "Replace Soon" (the "Replace Soon" indicates the battery capacity has dropped below 80% of Design Capacity).

The only time Charge Cycles has any real meaning is when the Charge Cycles are nearing 1,000 which would tell you that the battery may be getting to its end of life. Otherwise disregard the Charge Cycles as a health indicator.

Battery suddenly says 'replace now'.
