what is the purpose of this app at start up? I am not able to disable it - should I?

What is the "Home" app and why do I have it on my iPad home screen and Settings application? I never had it downloaded when I bought my device and all of a sudden, it's on my: a) iPad Home Screen b) Settings Application list c) App Store downloaded item list. In past had a "malware" app on my computer, was installed for me at Apple store without charger. Lost this app the I had to totally refresh my computer. Now do I restore this app? In past had a "malware" prevention app on my computer, was installed at Apple store without charge. Lost this when I had to totally replace all software on my computer. How do I restore this or is there a similar alternative

It used to be an app that would launch iTunes when you connected a device and had the option "Launch iTunes when this device is connected" selected. If you have something set up in Finder to automatically sync your devices on connection that might be the explanation.
