What is the best way to connect analog audio equipment for digitizing audio cassettes and vinyl?

Audio Line In on 13" MacBook Pro 2017 I am trying to digitize cassettes and vinyl. I had read that I could hook my amp/cassette deck up to my MacBook Pro (13" 2017) via a 3.5mm to RCA cable connected to the headphone port on the laptop and the Tape Output on my amp or cassette deck. However, the headphone out on the laptop is not recognizing the cable and therefore I am not able to switch the headphone port to a line in. Is it possible to do so somehow or can I use the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter to make my Thunderbolt ports a line in? I want the best resolution possible. FYI, I am planning to use either Audacity or Garage Band to convert the cassettes to digital files. Thanks for the help.

Recording Analog to new iMac I recently purchased a new iMac and discovered that Apple has eliminated the 3.5mm audio input port. I have been systematically moving analog LP and tape to digital for some time, and would like to continue, but have no idea how. I purchased a stereo RCA-to-USB cable but of course nothing at the USB end tells the Mac that this is in any way an audio input. Curious if there is a simple resolution to this new input limitation.

Analog casette tape to WAV file via 21.5 inch 2017 iMac I've tried to copy an analog tape I made many years ago into Audacity on my iMac 2017 21.5 inch desktop computer. The iMac only has one sound port. It says, all I have to do is plug the output from the tape deck into the headphone jack on the iMac and the deck will appear on the list of devices in the system preference, sound window. But it never appears. I play the tape, but the iMac records the sound in the room I'm working in. Is there a third device needed here? Something that would attach between the iMac and the tape deck?

Something like Amazon.com: KKF USB 2.0 Audio Video Converter Capture Card Adapter Grabber Transfer VHS VCR USB TV Hi8 Game S Video to Digital DVD Converter, Support Vista XP mac OS Windows 10/8.1/8/7 : Electronics should work just fine.
