12.2 crash

My Mac Mini has crashed twice since installing 12.2, and Safari had problems loading a site today (had to quit and restart). I submitted the crash reports to Apple for grins.

Anyone else having similar experience?

Final results are in.

First, this appears to only happen on iNTel based Mac (my Mini). My wife's M1 based iMac does not crash with these settings.

It is caused by a combination of Energy Saver setting to turn display off after 1 hour (probably any other setting other than "Never"), AND use of the Photos screensaver.

Set the Energy Saver setting to "Never" for turning off the display - NO CRASHES.

Use a screen saver other than Photos (I chose Monterey) with the Energy Saver setting still "on" - NO CRASHES.

I passed this information on to Apple along with the crash information. Whether they look at it - well, who knows?

Not too good an reading Panic Reports but alternative >>

Etrecheck

Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

This includes AntiVirus, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.

This will include CleanMyMac

This will include BitDefender

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

For anyone following, I've narrowed down the continual crashes to Energy Saver setting(s) and/or the Photos screensaver.

By going into Energy Saver settings and setting "Turn off Display" to "never", as well as unchecking "Put Hard disks to sleep when possible", the crashes have stopped.

Since the Photos screensaver was a late addition to Monterey, it may be adding to the problem - I may wind up changing it to Monterey screensaver to see.

I'll start changing these options one by one and see which is the actual culprit.

Yeah, I just tried and the panic log exceeds that limit also (must be < 250,000 characters).

Looking farther down in the panic log, I found references to some Virtualbox extensions. I just updated that product and its extensions. I'll wait and see if that was the problem.

FWIW, I updated my wife's iMac (M1) yesterday also, which hasn't panic'd yet. No Virtualbox on that machine.

Thanks for the assist!

I appreciate your position on this, and held that position until recently. If there were no threats to macOS, Apple wouldn't be releasing so many security updates to their platforms. The more popular Apple products become, the more appealing of a target they are. It doesn't cost much, and peace of mind is worth a bit.

That being said, I *DID* take the time to uninstall the Intego products just to see if that had any influence on my crashes. That action had no impact. Still crashes, generally after power saver for monitor kicks in after 60 minutes of inactivity.
Oddly, etrecheck showing an Intego executable "running" from a non-existent location on disc. "ps -ef" can't find that executable running either, so I have no idea where it gets its info from.

Any thoughts on the best way to back up to 12.1.2? Is there an installer out there somewhere? I really hate to open a support incident with Apple, as it would likely be pretty painful.

Thanks!

Security Updates are a common thing to all OS Platforms including MS and Linux as new threats emerge.

But, one maybe equating Security with Virus Protection IMHO which is very different.

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

Added, is the Fact that since Big Sur macOS 11 and continues into Monterey macOS 12 - the OS is housed in a Sealed and Read Only Volume " which is encrypted by Apple and can not be altered, modified or otherwise removed by the User or other software .

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

The The Built in Security  is all that is required to protect the computer.

Should “ Certain & Specific Software “ referenced from above be installed - it will negatively impact macOS. It is suggested, to download directly from a respected ASC Contributor, the application Malwarebytes for Mac

It is free or paid for added features.

Run the Application and it should remove the malware / adware. Once done, restart computer and test.

Sophos Av Software

Intego AntiVirus

Uninstall your antivirus: Intego

It is necessary any many antivirus apps cause problems.

Launchd: /Library/LaunchAgents/com.seagate.SeagateStorageGauge.plist

Silverlight i is now obsolete and should be removed but dowful it is causing problem.

Plugin: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin

Second part - the damages the Intego Software has rendered to the OS although removed - are still on the computer.

The alterations, modification etc, done by Intego has actually rendered to computer More Vulnerable to problems that Protect the computer from a Non Existent Virus.

Possible Solution is to Restart in Recovery Mode - Intel Computer Command + r and choose the Reinstall macOS.

If this is an Apple Silicon M1 computer >> Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon and same process to Reinstall macOS.

This may just put the damaged System Files that Intego has cause back to working order without touching your personal files, setting and such.
