Running with Apple Watch: Average cadence and current cadence fail not match

Following up on this unresolved issue, I have an annoying problem with my Apple Watch 6. When I record a running workout with my watch, I monitor two values related my cadence (step frequency), the average cadence over the complete workout and the current cadence. My "current cadence" is consistently higher than my "average cadence" which does not make sense. For example, whenever I look at my watch the "current cadence" is displayed as 168 but the "average cadence" is only 162.

This is very frustrating to me because high cadence is an indicator of good running form, so I currently work on increasing it. However, when the displayed "current cadence" is systematically lower than the "average cadence", how I am supposed to monitor my progress? Which of the two values am I supposed to trust?

I did several tests to verify that this is not only my subjective impression. I ran in sync with music of a certain number of beats per minute. I also borrowed a friends Polar sports watch and wore it on the other wrist, double-tracking my workout. Both tests indicated that the "current cadence" is correct and the "average cadence" is off (typically around 5 steps per minute too low).

Switching to third-party apps does not help, because they will use the cadence metrics provided by the apple watch (tested with Strava and WorkOutDoors).

I know that the "average cadence" is just the number of steps taken during the workout divided by the total workout time. So, my current working hypothesis is that the watch fails to count steps whenever I look at it, because my wrists stops swinging. (When I look at my watch, "current cadence" gives me the cadence from the last couple of seconds when I did NOT look at my watch. But by looking at the watch, a couple of steps do not get counted, so that my "average cadence" will be always lower than what is shown to me as "current cadence".) If this is true, the more you look at your watch (because your interested in keeping your cadence high), the lower your average cadence will turn out :-((((

Any comments or suggestions?
