this appears on ID in System Preferences AND on my dock at system.
There are no updates in App Store. Updating on ID is circular and returns me to the same screen.
This is occurring on a 2012 MacBook Pro on MacOS Catalina 15.7.5

I was entering my pw in and around payment methods then prompted
to sign in again to iCloud - whereupon the red ball disappeared from

You probably need to sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID to make that red badge on Apple ID and the System Preferences Dock icon disappear.
and soon after an email arrived saying my ID had been updated with gender preference!
True, I had done that - am I advised that everyone will get the red ball if gender isn't stated?
And to top it off, the red ball is back! Grrr.
