notifications are random

I have an iPhone 12 Pro with iOS 15.2.1. This issue, however, has been going on since I got the device back in June 2021.

Notifications for just about anything only work randomly throughout the day. This includes email, text and phone calls in addition to various apps. Occasionally, something will sound during the day, but not very often. Because of this, I'm either constantly in my phone or I'm missing important texts and phone calls.

The device has been both updated and rebooted numerous times. I have verified the mute switch is not on, nor is DND, and the time is correctly set for my timezone. I have gone thru Notifications ensuring they are on, and I turn BlueTooth off every morning. As a last resort, I have also done a "Reset All Settings".

Nothing thus far has worked for getting notifications to sound reliably. As Apple is my only choice for syncing with my company email, I have no choice but to live with this. If anybody has any other suggestions to try, I'm all ears!!

I made an appointment for the Genius Bar yesterday, and they performed all of your suggestions plus some. They also put the device on a tester to ensure the speaker is working correctly. Nothing helped.

Ultimately, their resolution was to completely wipe my phone. Not only do I have notification sounds on my phone again, I also have them on my Apple Watch!

Granted, that was a rather extreme resolution, but it did work :)

Hey there Leigh_from_Newark,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. We'd be happy to take a closer look into what's going on with your notifications on your iPhone.

To get started, you've done a great job troubleshooting the issue. While we understand you ensured that notifications are enabled for your apps, we'd recommend reviewing the following resource to ensure all other notification settings are showing correct: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

If the settings appear correct, or if you've already gone through the above resource, we do see that there is an update available for your iPhone, and we would recommend updating the iOS which may help resolve the issue: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Also, check to see if all available app updates have been performed. This resource can help with that: Update apps or use automatic downloads.

If still having issues after going through the resources above, by chance do you use a VPN on your iPhone? If so, we would recommend disabling that temporarily to see if that's able to get notifications to work as expected.

If you don't use a VPN, and if the steps above are unable to help, then we would recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly from this link here: Get Support - Apple

Take care!
