Trying to update OS but can't get past "Checking for updates..."
I was alerted I needed to update my OS (currently running Big Sur 11.6.2). When I click on the update, I get the above problem.
The progress wheel has been spining for 30 minutes.
iMac Line (2012 and Later)
I’ve checked the Apple upMacOS server status and all is ok.
Do you have any cleanup apps or virus scanners installed, if so uninstall them as they aren’t needed with MacOS.
If you are using a VPN, turn it off.
Try again.
If it still doesn’t progress try starting in safe mode and try again

Maybe Avast is causing the problem.

I was having the same problem. I followed Mal-S's suggestion and deleted Bitdefender antivirus. I restarted, went to software update in preferences, and the option to download Monterey 12.2 came up within a few seconds. Monterey is downloading now without any hiccups so far.

What year and model Mac do you have?
If you want to go to Monterey you may have to go to the App store
Or use this link to open the macOS Monterey page on the App Store: Get macOS Monterey. Then click the Get button or iCloud download button.
What happens when this Terminal command is executed without Quotations marks " softwareupdate -l "
Before 12.2 some users had experienced same problem and it was resolved by booting to Recovery and reinstalling macOS on top of itself. Just make sure that you have a good backup first in case something happens.

I've ran Malwarebytes and Avast
I had a friend who is pretty knowledgeable help with diagnostics
Caches are empty
Trash is empty
internet/router is super fast
I've uninstalled Malwarebytes and Avast. I've restarted.
I've been getting this:
