Trying to update OS but can't get past "Checking for updates..."

I was alerted I needed to update my OS (currently running Big Sur 11.6.2). When I click on the update, I get the above problem.


The progress wheel has been spining for 30 minutes.

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

I’ve checked the Apple upMacOS server status and all is ok.


Do you have any cleanup apps or virus scanners installed, if so uninstall them as they aren’t needed with MacOS.

If you are using a VPN, turn it off.

Try again.

If it still doesn’t progress try starting in safe mode and try again

Maybe Avast is causing the problem.

I was having the same problem. I followed Mal-S's suggestion and deleted Bitdefender antivirus. I restarted, went to software update in preferences, and the option to download Monterey 12.2 came up within a few seconds. Monterey is downloading now without any hiccups so far.
