moving photos from Library to external hard drive

I formated my Lacie external drive for Mac and pc but when I drop and drag photos they show as 0bytes and I can't open the files.

I don't know if the drive is faulty.. it's brand new or if I'm missing something.

thanks in advance

What version of Photos do you have. At least one version of the app had a bug that resulted in empty files with exported directly to a disk with a FAT format. Workaround: Drag to the desktop first, then copy over. Bear in mind that drag and drop only yields a preview that's kind of middling quality and missing some metadata. You'll get a better quality export using the File -> Export command.
