Constant issues with my AirPods max not connecting

Ok it's a little more nuanced than the title suggests. when I put my AirPod max on my head I dont get the audio indication that they're connected and operational. instead it's just like putting them on if they were completely dead.

however they show they're connected on my 12 pro max.

ill take them off then put them in the case. wait a few seconds than ill remove them, I see the green LED indicator at the bottom showing it's connected. I put them on and same result.

ill do a restart (hold crown and NC button for 12 seconds - flashing amber) and my phone will show that it did restart. when I put them on my head again it may be hit or miss if they give me the audio indicator that they're operational. but my phone still shows its connected. the same thing happens when I test on my MacBook Pro.

the kicker is when I go into the bluetooth settings, I see all the settings as if it's connected but when I manually switch to noise cancellation, while the headphones are on my head, it says I need to put them on in order to switch to NC.

I've done an insane amount of restarts and factory resets. and it's all inconsistent. and when I do get it working, if I take them off, if I come back to them they stop working again.

im thinking it may have something to do with the proximity sensor but im not sure.

my headphones litterally fell out of warranty and apple charges $300 (effectively to have them sent to be repaired. I get it, im technically out of warranty, but barely. and honestly what's more disappointing is the fact that these costs over $550 and they couldn't make it past a year.

has anyone else experienced the same issue?

and im ultimately trying to catch a break since, again, these just ('conveniently') started malfunctioning right out side the warranty period. and then Apple charges $300? might as well buy new headphones...which may be the strategy.

any who hopefully this isn't a unique issue.

My experience has been the same, I’m on my second replacement already (so, third pair) and hoping that either they last a long time (headphones should be forever) or get damaged again before December (warranty ends there for me) to get one last replacement. What you can do is try to disable “automatic head detection” as they would at least continue playback after taking them off extending those lucky shots when it works.

These headphones look strong physically speaking but something must have gone really wrong on the electronics side, they are flimsy. After some time they stop detecting the head, ANC/Transparency stops activating, nothing makes them play or connect, etc.

I have lost countless hours trying to reconnect them when they get faulty, then the usual hour long loop with support representatives “reset SMC, NVRam, sign-out/sign-in, etc” dance (honestly Apple, if this is your magic fix it all bullet, make a button that does it all in one shot or something to get this step out of the way as quick as possible).

Reddit posts are riddled with tons of users with these exact same issues, if you are out of warranty and won’t do anything keep them around, I think this warrants one of those recalls like it happened with the MacBook keyboards. Also maybe give an apple store a visit, maybe some luck can happen if you got time.

Else, sorry that I got nothing beyond that to say, wanted to leave some awareness, these are not isolated cases. The sad part is they are great headphones, can use them 8+hrs straight, convenience of connecting everywhere Apple easily, they sound great (for my non audiophile ears at least)… except when they stop working, which is unacceptable for a $500+ premium headset.

Hello ImJeph,

We see you're having issues with head detection on your AirPods Max, and we'd like to help.

We'd recommend double-checking if Automatic Head Detection is still on. This page can help out with locating that: Change audio settings for AirPods Max

It can also help to try pairing the AirPods to a different device, if possible, just to see if it continues happening there too.

Be sure to also check if the installed firmware is the latest one. This can be found in Settings > General > About > Select the AirPods. This will only show when the AirPods are connected. For reference, the latest firmware version at the moment for them is 4C165.

Cheers.

Hi ImJeph,

I had the same issues since the beginning (December 2020) and I still have it... I was in the store and Apple changed it 2 or 3 times in warranty... In the end, I stopped going to replace it every few months. In my opinion, it's the worst product in years and a horrible experience.

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for you or for me. What I have tried, was to go Settings > Bluetooth > Device (AirPods Max) > Forget This Device and it worked for a period, but at some point I cannot get any device ( at least 4 iOS devices - latest iOS version) and (2 macOS devices) to "see" the AirPods Max.

Due to the small volume of sale, I don't think that Apple will have the interest to solve the issues and there are not enough clients with the issue for a class action like it was it the battery years ago...
