There are two kinds of metadata involved when you consider jpeg or other image file.

One is the file data. This is what the Finder shows. This tells you nothing about the contents of the file, just the File itself.

The problem with File metadata is that it can easily change as the file is moved from place to place or exported, e-mailed, uploaded etc.

Photographs have also got both Exif and IPTC metadata. The date and time that your camera snapped the Photograph is recorded in the Exif metadata. Regardless of what the file date says, this is the actual time recorded by the camera.

Photo applications like Photos, CaptureOne, Lightroom, Mylio, Photoshop etc get their date and time from the Exif metadata.

When you export from Photos to the Finder a new file is created containing your photograph (and its Exif). The File date is - quite accurately - reported as the date of Export.

However, the Photo Date doesn't change.

The problem is that the Finder doesn't work with Exif.

So, your photo has the correct date, and so does the file, but they are different things. To sort on the Photo date you'll need to use a photo app.

There are apps that will edit the file data to match the Exif. This is one:

"Are transferring the HEIC images via iCloud? If so the file date on your mac is set to the date the file was downloaded from iCloud - this will likely be different from the date/time the image was captured.

If you import from a file on your drive, then the file date will be whatever is the date of the file on your drive."

Yes, that is correct in the part exporting HEIC via iCloud Photos - it spoiles file creation date (but EXIF Creation Date remains correct and can be exported to file cration)

BUT! When one imports his photos by "obsolete" and "outdated" Photo Stream - imagine what! File creation date remains correct! Can u imagine that?

So after of dozen days of usinf iCloud Photos instead of Photo Stream I'm starting to lean to go back to using the Photo Stream again. At least it's behaviour is transparent and predictable.

But again - these are file dates - and have nothing to do with the image capture date which is stored and fixed in the EXIF data. File dates can change as a result of file moves or copies depending on which app (or even OS Version) is doing the file move/copy.
