Crazy Battery Drain on a two week old iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Hi!

I am facing an issue with my brand new iPhone 13 Pro Max. I got it on 18th January, and the first week of usage was great. Amazing battery life. I am a person whose screen time daily is around 6-7 hours. Even after that I used to have 70 percent plus battery left on my iPhone at the end of the day.

But on Wednesday last week, I travelled to another city and charged my phone on a wireless charger in my car and used my old iPhone XS Max’s charging wire to charge from the USB port in the car. Since then I am noticing crazyyyy battery drain. The battery used to fall 20% in an hour on 26th, 27th and 28th January. I have tried forced reset, and all the tips and tricks I found online to help increase the battery usage. I reset all the settings as well. Didn’t work. Then I reset my phone completely. Erased the content. Still didn’t work. Then I took it to an authorized service provider and they installed the newest iOS 15.3, and it still hasn’t improved 😭😭.

I am so sad and worried because its a new phone! And I was excited for its extended battery life. Any help would be MUCH APPRECIATED. With all that I’ve read on the internet, the closest I’ve come to identifying the issue is may be its because of the iOS update. When I got the phone it was running on iOS 15.2 (I think, I’m not sure). Then I updated it on 21st January to iOS 15.2.1. I didn’t notice the battery drain till 26th January but a lot of people online were saying that they are facing massive amounts of battery drain after this update.

When I went to the Support Centre, they ran the diagnostics and an error showed in the iOS, and I thought yay problem solved. They updated it and I took my phone home. But the problem persisted.

Also is it possible that it’s a hardware issue but it’s not showing up in the diagnostics?

I’m so confused here. And I’m getting impatient too. I read online in different places that sometimes the iOS update can take days to update the iPhone and you should wait atleast a week before you do anything about the battery drain. And the battery has improved slightly compared to the drain I faced on 27th and 28th January. My phone ran through its entire battery in a matter of 3-4 hours and that was with Wifi and mobile data disabled. Nothing was going on in the phone. Today I charged my phone to 100% 2 hours and 45 minutes ago and the battery percentage is still at 76%. But as I said, during the first week of using this phone 70% or 71% battery was what I was left with at the end of the day. Battery health is at 100%. The battery falls even if I’m not doing anything on the phone. I went to sleep at 1 in the morning and turned off mobile data and wifi with my phone at 100%. I woke up at 8 in the morning and the phone’s battery was around 45%.

WHAT DO I DO 😭😭😭😭😭😭!

Hello Ayat1,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. As we understand it, you're finding your battery life is shorter than expected, and you've already tried restoring the device and had it inspected at a service provider. Is that right? We'd like to share a suggestion that might help get to the bottom of this.

Under Settings > Battery, what do you see for usage? Are any apps showing messages about "Background Activity" or "No Cell Coverage and Low Signal?" These details might help to work out more about what's happening: About the battery usage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Let us know what you find, and take care.

You can see in this article how to save the battery life :

Tips for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Update to the latest software.

Always make sure your device is using the latest version of iOS.

  • If you are using iOS 5 or later, see if you need an update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If an update is available, you can plug your device into a power source and update wirelessly or plug it into your computer and update with the latest version of iTunes.

Optimize your settings.

There are two simple ways you can preserve battery life — no matter how you use your device: adjust your screen brightness and use Wi‑Fi.

Dim the screen or turn on Auto-Brightness to extend battery life.

  • To dim, open Control Center and drag the Brightness slider to the bottom.
  • Auto-Brightness adjusts your screen to lighting conditions automatically. To activate it, go to Settings > Accessibility. Tap Display & Text Size, then turn on Auto-Brightness.

When you use your device to access data, a Wi‑Fi connection uses less power than a cellular network — so keep Wi‑Fi on at all times. To turn on Wi‑Fi, go to Settings > Wi‑Fi to access a Wi‑Fi network.

Enable Low Power Mode.

Introduced with iOS 9, Low Power Mode is an easy way to extend the battery life of your iPhone when it starts to get low. Your iPhone lets you know when your battery level goes down to 20%, and again at 10%, and lets you turn on Low Power Mode with one tap. Or you can enable it by going to Settings > Battery. Low Power Mode reduces display brightness, optimizes device performance, and minimizes system animations. Apps including Mail will not download content in the background, and features like AirDrop, iCloud sync, and Continuity will be disabled. You can still use key functions like making and receiving phone calls, email, and messages, accessing the Internet, and more. And when your phone charges up again, Low Power Mode automatically switches off.

View Battery Usage information

With iOS, you can easily manage your device’s battery life, because you can see the proportion of your battery used by each app (unless the device is charging). To view your usage, go to Settings > Battery.

Here are the messages you may see listed below the apps you’ve been using:

Background Activity. This indicates that the battery was used by the app while it was in the background — that is, while you were using another app.

  • To improve battery life, you can turn off the feature that allows apps to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and select Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, or Off to turn off Background App Refresh entirely.
  • If the Mail app lists Background Activity, you can choose to fetch data manually or increase the fetch interval. Go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Fetch New Data.

Location and Background Location. This indicates that the app is using location services.

  • You can optimize your battery life by turning off Location Services for the app. Turn off in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  • In Location Services, you can see each app listed with its permission setting. Apps that recently used location services have an indicator next to the on/off switch.

Home & Lock Screen. This indicates that the Home screen or Lock screen was displayed on your device. For example, the display was awakened by pressing the Home button or by a notification.

  • If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap the app and set Allow Notifications to Off.

No Cell Coverage and Low Signal. This indicates either that you are in a poor cell coverage area and your iOS device is searching for a better signal or that you’ve used your device in low-signal conditions, which has affected your battery life.

  • You can optimize your battery life by turning on Airplane mode. Open Control Center and tap the Airplane mode icon. Note that you cannot make or receive calls while in Airplane mode.

Plug in and power on your computer to charge your device.

Make sure your computer is plugged in and powered on when you’re using it to charge your iOS device via USB. If your device is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, your device’s battery may drain. Note that iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS cannot be charged with a FireWire power adapter or FireWire-based car charger.

Take care!

Hi Ryane77,

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I don’t see ANYTHING under battery usage. My husband thought that too, that the battery may be falling because of low signal and cell coverage but that is not the case because the battery continues to fall even if the phone is on airplane mode. Secondly, the battery usage graph shows no apps using the battery. As I’ve circled the portion in the screenshot I posted above, the battery fell overnight, from 100% at 1am to 45% at 8am!! No apps can be seen in the graph that were using the battery. Mobile Data and Wifi were off as well. I don’t know what to do, this is a brand new phone why is this happening 😢😭😭!

If the phone is new or has been recently completely restored to factory state, it will take a couple of days before the apps start showing up under Battery usage.

You should be charging the phone overnight, by the way.

Hey!

Yes I did. I can’t remember the exact date but yes I did update to 15.2.1 around 21st or 22nd January. I didn’t notice the battery drain problem till 26th January, that’s when I travelled and charged the phone in my car with my old iPhone’s cable. My phone got very warm because it was on charge with a navigation app on but that is not unusual because it has happened before to me on older iPhones. When they ran the diagnostics at Service Provider no hardware problem was detected and if the IC was fried or something physically was wrong with the battery, it would have showed up. My battery health is 100% and the phone charges at its normal pace too, which is quite fast for iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Why do you ask? Are you facing the same problem?

Feb 1, 2022 10:07 AM in response to Iafeef

Thanks for this but I have tried EVERYTHING there is online about increasing the battery life throughout a day and nothing had happened. I did all of the above mentioned things, no improvement. And if everything was normal and it was just the background app refresh and all of the rest of the stuff you mentioned the battery wouldn’t have fallen 55% during seven hours with the phone on standby with mobile data and wifi off.
