Updating Mojave OS

How should I update my OS (Mojave) without crashing my MacBook Pro or losing my data? I bought my MacBook Pro in January 2020 with Mojave and know I need to update but I am afraid of either crashing my computer (this already happened to me) or of losing data. How should I go about updating my OS? Thanks!

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and proceed normally.

Catalina and newer won't run 32-bit software; download and use Go64 to scan for it. To check other programs, click here and look them up.

Hello and thanks for your answer. However, I don't want to reinstall Mojave on my MacbookPro, I want to install a more recent operating system, like Catalina, Big Sur or Monterey. I believe that if I don't update my OS I will start to encounter trouble on my computer. This happened before with mum former computer. Thanks if you have any more information.
