Scroll gesture while dragging moves mouse pointer instead
Ever since two-finger scrolling was supported on macOS laptop trackpads - i.e. "for as long as I can remember" - you can scroll while dragging an object. This is an extremely useful and important thing in a lot of places; although some lists will auto-scroll if you hover near their edges, that's slow and janky and, besides, they don't all do that.
To be clear, you single-finger click to start dragging something over to wherever you want it to go; then while holding that finger, an additional two finger gesture can be used to scroll content in any application.
In Monterey, this broke. Most of the time - but alarmingly, not always! - the mouse pointer moves instead, which is something that two finger scrolling should never ever do. It's really infuriating as sometimes the content might just start to scroll a bit but then macOS "changes its mind" and moves the pointer, other times the pointer just skates off quickly straight away, other times scrolling works fine. It's a minefield of broken user interaction. It seems to happen in any application.
- It is not the same issue as the Finder horizontal scroll bug introduced in Monterey.
- It is not the same issue as Magic Mouse scrolling failing to work after the computer wakes from sleep introduced in Monterey.
- It does not appear to be the same issue as the M1 Mac "two finger scrolling stops working" bug introduced in Monterey.
- It does not appear to be the same issue, but may be related to the issue, of two-finger taps for "secondary click" not working, introduced in Monterey but allegedly fixed in a recent update.
It's kind of incredible that Monterey has so many brand new bugs in such a fundamental and vital part of the user interface. The problem has persisted from 12.0 through 12.2 including betas, and I see it on several machines, the most recent being a 2019 Macbook Pro. I have no M1 computers presently so can't comment on those.
Is it just me?! Heh. Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions!
