HP suggests that you 'discover' many USB-connected printers using HP Smart for desktop:

The link above may open the Mac App Store download page as well.
hp smart is not very smart about ethernet-connected printers.
Hi,
Was that a driver download from HP's support page for the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w?
There is an HP 5.1.1 Printer Software Update package from Apple at https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1888?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US . The system requirements for the 5.1.1 package from Apple say Not compatible with macOS v12 and newer, but one report about an HP LaserJet P1005 (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253578097?answerId=256707369022#256707369022) indicated that it worked with macOS 12.1 anyway.
If you have not done so already, you could perhaps carry out a few experiments with the 5.1.1 package from Apple. Look for an HP LaserJet Professional P1100w or HP LaserJet Professional P1100 version 6.9 driver. This may or may not work. It may not even install at all.
Since software conflicts cannot be ruled out, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files before testing anything.
BTW, if you want to try a wireless network connection (via a Wi-Fi router) as an alternative to USB, the HP LaserJet P1102w does not appear to be listed in the December 14, 2021 (US) version of About AirPrint - Apple Support. However, I noticed that this model was mentioned in an iOS: AirPrint 101 HT4356 article from Apple (February 13, 2012), so it may be an older AirPrint version. It may also be worth checking whether there are any printer firmware updates.

Sorry about the delay. Got frustrated and left the printer alone for awhile. I'm running Monterey 12.2. When I download the HP driver it stated that the driver only works for 12.0 or earlier. No other driver is available. My printer is an HP 1102w. The HP communities have been howling about the fact that it has been at least a month for HP to do anything.
There is no difference between 12.0 and 12.2 that has any impact on Printer DRIVERS. Ignore that.
How are you connecting to this printer?
if over Wi-Fi, you need to, in Wi-Fi settings, make certain you set IPv6 connection to "Link-Local Only" so that MacOS Discovery protocol can work its magic.
Have an ethernet cable from the computer to the printer. Should be plug and play. Used the site you sent me and it wouldn't pull up the printer. I already downloaded the HP smart app a couple of days ago and it wouldn't work either. The HP message board has many people with the same problem with this printer.
would help if you described the model of the HP printer and the connection type. Also include the origin of the printer software.
¿AND, are you still running 10.13 like your tag says, or have you upgraded to Monterey, like the article you linked in with suggests?
Never used Bluetooth. USB wired to the printer. Was working fine before 12.1 was installed.
Didn't work. Appreciate your time. I remember when HP was a printer company.
<< Didn't work. >>
what part did not work? App Store? download? install? HP smart is not very smart?
Ethernet is very different from USB connection.
To connect via Ethernet, in general you must connect the Printer directly to your ROUTER, not to your Mac.
¿what model-year MacBook Pro?
Thank you. Hope this works.
