Connecting MacBook M1 Pro to Thunderbolt Display

Is there a way to use the HDMI port on the 16" MacBook Pro M1 Pro and connect to a Thunderbolt Display, thunderbolt port on the back of the monitor? I have the cord for it but it doesn't seem to recognize I am connected. Am I missing something or perhaps I need a newer cord? Thanks for any help.

Hello,

As far as I am aware HDMI cannot be converted to Thunderbolt but you could use your USB-C port with a Thunderbolt 2 converter (assuming the display is using Thunderbolt 2).

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) - Technical Specifications

"Video Support

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at 1 billion colors and:

  • Up to two external displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors (M1 Pro) or
  • Up to three external displays with up to 6K resolution and one external display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors (M1 Max)

Thunderbolt 4 digital video output

  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, DVI, and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)

HDMI digital video output

  • Support for one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz
  • DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (sold separately)"

Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter

I hope this helps.

I understand that for sure. I have a shoebox filled with old cords and adapters. No idea why I keep them. My anxiety must think 20 year old cords will make a comeback haha.

I'm sure you can find cheaper adapters from 3rd party manufacturers. I just linked the Apple once since it was quicker to find.

Thanks for your response, Jeff.

For clarity, let me ask you, did you connect your Apple ThunderBolt Display and MacBook Pro M1 via TB2-TB3 Adapter using the Secondary ThunderBolt Port at the Back of the Display and another Thunderbolt Cable, while bypassing the builtin Octopus Cable of the Display?
