MBA always crashes when running Time Machine backup

Since upgrading to Monterey, my Intel-based MacBook Air crashes whenever a Time Machine backup is in progress. I am using a Satechi hub and an WD Elements external drive. It all used to work just fine. The crash report suggests that the process active at the time of the crash was com.apple.MailServiceAgent and the Exception Type is EXC_CRASH. Is anybody else having the same problems?

Last night I installed the trial version of Carbon Copy Cloner and it did a backup without any problem. I don't think hardware is the problem, although the Satechi hub is not always functioning flawlessly (I sometimes have to plug/unplug or even restart Mac OS to get all the ports to work).
