getting error when trying to download macOD Monterey installation cannot proceed because the install is damaged, I have tried to redownload the install and it still does not work

I have a MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2017 that has macOS High Sierra. I have tried twice to install macOS Monterey and keep getting the error, installation cannot proceed because the installer is damaged. What do I do to fix it?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

Your profile says you have 10.13. Other users have had problems skipping macOS versions and even not fully updating one version before going to the next version.

I recommend that first upgrade to 10.14. the to 10.15, then to 11 and finally to 12 (Monterey) You can get it using these instructions

How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support

Also:

Do you have enough free disk space?

If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac needs 26GB of available storage to upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier release, your Mac needs up to 44GB of available storage.

Also uninstall any antivirus and "cleaning" apps before trying installing again.

Further, you need an Apple disk installed to upgrade to Monterey since the upgrade includes an update to the Mac's firmware. That update looks for an Apple disk and write to the dick to do the firmware update. The install will terminate or freeze if no Apple disk.

Thank you everyone for all your feedback. I used a little from everyones response.

Uninstalled - sophos home free antivirus

Deleted - "Install macOS Monterey" from the Applications folder and any others that may have been there from missing so many.

Booted into safe mode was able to install Mojave

Then installed Catalina, Big Sur and eventually Monterey. took hours

Now my laptop is up to date. Not sure what happened as to why it missed the updates. I will have to be on top of that in the future.

Thank you!!!!!

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence.

>>  Computer Qualify for the Monterey upgrade

macOS Big Sur 11 hardware requirements

macOS Catalina 10.15 hardware requirements

macOS Mojave 10.14 hardware requirements

Caution - jumping over all the newer versions and directly to Big Sur  / Monterey on Qualifying computers is Technically possible - there are those who have attempted and were successful. Then there are those who attempted and had less than good results.

If this is a Production or Mission Critical Set-up - a more prudent and measure approach is suggested.

The above is from observations on the Apple Support Community Forums and IMHO

Further - is running High Sierra 10.13 and the drive has not converted to the new APFS Format - this may be achieved by upgrading to Mojave macOS 10.14

Make Time Machine Backup  is very useful and can be used to Revert to Previous Working macOS

Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina, Big Sur & Monterey supports only 64 bit and there is no workaround.

Suggest using Go64 to find 32 bit application before attempting the upGrade. Some or many of the Application already installed may required update or upGrades to 64 Bit Versions.

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Un-installers, etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal  operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation

Going into safe mode has allowed me to be able to download macOS Mojave through the App Store. It is in the process of installing Mojave. Do you think I should just skip directly to Monterey? Or is it wiser to do the version jumps, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, then Monterey?

Not sure what happened with my MacBook why it didn't update or offer updates as needed. I haven't been on it much lately and when I checked for updates I saw the version was behind was was available for the MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2017 and 800GB of space available and it does qualify.

I am hoping that after Mojave installs that I will be able to install the other versions without having to go into safe mode. But if I do I will.
