My local apple store just returned my machines after doing a clean OS install and full diagnostics. Problem was system powered down (twice) and could not be restarted. Now I'm home with it, plugged it and booted up. But it won't recognize the mouse. Tried turning it on and off a few times but still doesn't acknowledge it, so can't get any further with start up. Any help greatly appreciated. andy

Try the tips from the link first. If they don’t work, try using a wired mouse to navigate to Bluetooth settings or wireless mouse settings in System Preferences to see if the device is showing up there.

You may need to re-pair it in System preference-Bluetooth and please Use any USB Mouse to re-pair your mouse. It is always wise to have a USB mouse and keyboard available in case of wireless keyboard and mouse trouble.
This is the primary reason I have a couple of cheap USB KBs and Mice ... there are times you need one or both.
Not helpful. Not a Macbook, an iMac 2021. Instructions don't solve problem.

I understand that it is an iMac, the link works with all Mac devices.
