iPhone Photos keep re-appearing after deleting

Hello,

My iphone storage is full and I try to free space with deleting videos and photos but iphone immediately return them back or they are restored after several days. I’ve tried with turning off Icloud photos but that didn’t help. Now i can not free space, but I would like to. Could someone know any solution for that?

Hello DilyanGalabov,

We understand that videos and pictures you delete from your iPhone are re-appearing.

When you delete them, are you seeing the images move to an album titled Recently Deleted? If so, are you also deleting from there?

Are you able to transfer your pictures and videos to a computer and then delete them? Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or PC

If you’re turned iCloud Photos back on, can you verify whether all pictures, including the deleted ones appear on the iCloud website? iCloud

Thank you.

Yoy will get these problems if you let the phone get completely full - you should have seen a warning in Settings app.

If you import them into a computer running Photos or Photos for Windows you can use the "Delete on import" option ehich will empty the phone as they import.

You can then "sync" them back to the phone and they will take up half the amount of space.

Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Sync photos from Mac

The quality of the pictures will reduce but you would not spot the difference unless you wanted to blow them up. Professionals that use this method would always print from the "master" on the computer.

The cloud equivalent would be to turn on iCloud photos (after increasing your iCloud storage plan) then turn on Optimised Storage in Settings, general, iPhone storage. You can pull down an original at will.

Back up the phone in the normal way if you can before experimenting.

I shoukd add that if you go to the workflow using the computer:

  • You must make multiple backups of the computer
  • The phone will no longer back up the photos as they no longer reside on the phone.

Same applies if you go iCloud Photos

  • Photos reside on iCloud
  • They are not on the phone backup or accessible from the phone
  • if you delete a photo on the phone it also deletes from iCloud

I would do some research online.

Hello, AnnieL2

I will answer your questions one by one:

  1. When you delete them, are you seeing the images move to an album titled Recently Deleted? If so, are you also deleting from there? - Here the answer is sometimes they go sometimes they don’t. Sometime when they go to Recently Deleted and I delete them and they all reappear after several days but sometime they are deleted permanently but that doesn’t happens frequently(maybe 1 time from 10 tries). In other scenario they doesn’t even go to Recently deleted and they reappear immediately.
  2. Are you able to transfer your pictures and videos to a computer and then delete them? - Yes i can transfer them to computer, but i can’t delete them anyway from phone.
  3. If you’re turned iCloud Photos back on, can you verify whether all pictures, including the deleted ones appear on the iCloud website? - I can’t turned on now iCloud Photos because i don’t have enough storage in my phone.

Thank you very much for your reply, anyway :)

AnnieL2,

Actually I do not want to complete backup or only pictures from phone to computer because I am afraid of that i do not have enough storage and in that way will not be possible to return them to my phoneI really don’t understand why i can not delete pictures when I have not enough storage- thats a big minus for such an expensive phone. Maybe I should buy iCloud storage and then try this way to be sure that i will return them back. Thank you again for your reply :).

If you are 100% sure that will optimize storage and will have more space than before then i will try it?One more question comes to my mind now - if I make completely backup and restore it afterwards does the quality of the pictures will reduce?( I know that will not help in my case but just asking)

After your answer for sureness i will try it and will write back if this solves the problem even the picture quality reduces but it is not possible to see the difference.

Thanks again :)

Here is the size of my Mac Photos library 107 GB

Here is the fully sync'd iPad library (my phone is not big enough for all the photos and videos) 55GB

I sync a subset to my phones (selected albums, no videos)

I repeat, you can't copy or move photos or videos from the phone to somewhere else without buying third party apps because they are a mirror copy of what is on the master Photos app on the computer.

Since modern iphones use HEIC compressed photos they don't save as much space as the old jpegs do.

Hello, LD150

Sorry for the late response but that doesn't fix the issue I've did it and even takes more memory than before. Firstly my available storage was 33GB now it is 29GB. In a result doesn't free up space. But thank you very much, I'm now backuping my Iphone because when I synced photos they went to a external folder and its not in the albums like before(but that its normal).

DilyanGalabov,

Do you have the pictures you want to keep backed up somewhere? Ways to do that are to transfer them to a computer, complete a backup to iCloud (different than syncing with iCloud Photos), or complete a backup to a computer. How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch It’s important to note that if the pictures are syncing with iCloud, they will not be stored in a backup. This is key, because if they are in the process of downloading from iCloud after turning off iCloud Photos but have run out of room on your iPhone to be stored locally, they will not be included.

If so, next we’d like to have you restart your iPhone. Once restarted, test deleting again.

Thanks.
