Is there a way to extend my laptop screen to the TV monitor? I don't want to see double screens. I need my laptop screen to "extend" so I can multi-task. My laptop is a 2012 MacBook Pro. It's nearing end of life, but in the meantime...I'd like to be able to extend my screen.

in this arrangement window, the two screen strongly overlap, but there is enough that does not overlap that you can drag one screen off the other and make them into an extended desktop. (Or uncheck the mirror displays checkbox).
Then you get something like this:

Change your preferences
Connect to your TV
On your Mac: System Preferences > Displays > Display Settings
You can select whether to mirror or extend, change the "location" left/right/top, etc.
Do you have a picture on the TV set? what picture?
When you uncheck
[√] Mirror displays ...
... do you get two distinct blue boxes in the arrange pane (second illustration), or one on top of the other (first illustration) ?? or something else?
did you ever install DisplayLink software?
Can you drag one of the display off the pile?
Thank you so much! I'm in business now! all is working. Now I just need to decide what i'm getting next. this laptop is slow as molasses. My screen today went black w/rows of horizontal lines on it. I was on a webex, so not sure if the data was messing with my computer. I retired yesterday and will on occasion need to have a webex for training and I can't have my laptop fail on me in the middle of it! thanks again.
Unchecking the mirror box does nothing. On the tv, it doesn’t let me move it to left, right, . This is a MB Pro mid 2012 with the latest update.
EXACTLY what cables, adapters, and docks are you using to make this connection?
I have an hdmi from tv to thunderbolt in laptop. No docking stations.

FYI- I had an update tonight and all of a sudden, I can now extend my screens. All is good. Thanks for the hand holding 😀

You should be able to place it along any edge, as long as it shares part of at least one edge. The menuBar Icon can also be dragged to either display.
