how can I fix data leaks?

How can data leaks be fixed? I was trying to subscribe to a VPN but although the company confirmed the router was working properly, it was unable to perform due to data leaks. I have done a few DNS tests and I do have leaks. Is there a way to fix this please? I have installed 1Password and am currently updating my security, but will this fix leaks already existing?

Are you talking about the message that your password has been found in the data leak? If so, there’s nothing you can do about it besides changing your password. Some server somewhere had a data leak which revealed passwords. Apple checks your passwords against that list and has found some of them on the list. It doesn’t mean that your username and password were compromised. It just means you should stop using that password.

I don’t understand how subscribing to a VPN would be affected unless you were using a leaked password and the VPN said don’t do that. Why are you subscribing to a VPN? Did you fall for the FUD that implied the entire world is monitoring your connections and stealing all of your information? A VPN just routes all of your traffic through one location where they have easy access to it all so they can sell your entire life to the highest bidder. There is no guarantee that a VPN is not the security threat you are intending to avoid.

No, I was not told that. I was advised that the reason I could not connect up to the VPN was that I probably had a data leak. When I did the DNS test it confirmed that this was the case. I am changing passwords and using 1Password to hopefully stop this problem. But I would like to know if the existing data leaks can be fixed so that I can use the VPN service. I have no idea how I might be using a leaked password, and I have no idea what a FUD is. However, thank you for trying to help…….

Sorry I have no idea what VPN scammers are even. I just want to know whether changing all my passwords and subscribing to 1Password will clean up the "data leaks" that are preventing me from subscribing to a service called Blink Connect here in France, which offers a preconfigured router for idiots like me. I think they use Nord. Lots of British expats use this service but apparently data leaks are preventing me from doing likewise. This is what Blink told me.

No one thinks you're a scammer. The reference was to folks who supply VPN services, an area where people who are less than entirely honest can often be found. This reference to "data leaks" sounds very like the support service fobbing you off with a serious-sounding problem, which actually means nothing. So, you don't know what a dat leak is, and neither does anybody else. Therefore no one knows how to fix it.

The other approach is to consider why you think you need a VPN? What is the problem you're trying to solve? Perhaps there is another way to approach it.

Thank you for that. I want a VPN for security and for streaming. I am in France and cannot access any UK Tv programmes because I have no satellite broadband. This company offers this service for Expats like me. They supplied me with a preconfigured Huawei 4g LTE router a few years ago. Apparently this router, though it works fine, has no VPN "client". When I subscribed to the mini Gizmo (same company who sold me my router and who I trust) it was supposed to overcome this lack of VPN client, but will not work with my system because of these data leaks. I have asked Apple and they have told me to upgrade to Monterey and see if that clears the problem. I am nervous about doing that as I had a lot of problems at first with Big Sur. But at least Apple Support listened to my problem and were polite, which I did not get here. So thank you for your reply. I will do the upgrade, but if there are any suggestions you can make I would be grateful for them.

I suspect Apple Support are suggesting the upgrade because they haven't a clue what this "data leak" is either. It just doesn't make any sense.

There are a lot of VPN services that are quite independent of hardware, and your usage scenario is not uncommon. I use Windscribe for just this purpose. It allows you to connect to a server in the preferred country, and so you can access the internet as though from there. It is a simple download and install, and no data leaks mentioned. U use the Pro version.
