Safari opens and closes tabs by itself

Hello!

Safari has started reopening tabs that were closed a few seconds ago, and also closing or reloading tabs that have just been opened. If I open any tabs, safari closes them or reload. If I close tabs, safari will reopen them.

I checked my iMac for viruses and found nothing.

iMac 27" late 2013, macOS Catalina 10.15.7, Safari 15.4

Even weirder, the same problem occurred a few days later on my MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro, macOS Monterey 12.3 Beta, Safari 15.4. But safari doesn't always work this way on a MacBook. Sometimes Safari works fine on a MacBook, sometimes it starts to close and open tabs like the one on iMac. Checked for viruses - no viruses.

I didn't find similar problems on the internet. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to get rid of this annoying problem?

Thanks!

I've had the same issues told above and I use safari to read multiple (100+) stories so you can imagine the pain of opening my phone to no tabs in a group or repeated tab deletions. Anyhow, I found a fix that has been working for me for the past hour (hopefully it holds up). In Settings, go to iCloud and un-tick Safari. This disables safari syncing with iCloud. Probably a pain if you take advantage of this function, but it will allow you to search in peace. Upvote if this helps you so we can help others!

I'm also seeing this behaviour once in a while and it's annoying because I can't rely on tabs not be lost, which can be a nuisance at best and make me lose important information at worst.

Also using iCloud Tabs, and specifically Tab Groups. I notice that tab groups are not that reliable; sometimes tabs that I "move" from one group to another just get lost in limbo.

Issues only appear on Mac, not iOS. Only since Safari 15.

Hi there RuslanSPb,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Thanks for reaching out to us with this issue you're having with the tabs on Safari. We're happy to help.

The tabs reopening on their own certainly seems unexpected. Do you use iCloud Tabs by chance? This article covers what this is and how to set it up: Set up and use iCloud Tabs. If you have more than one device signed into your Apple ID, do you notice the same behavior in Safari when you close tabs?

Have you tried clearing Safari history on your iPhone and then testing again to see if that resolves the issue: Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Feel free to reach back out if you have any questions.

Take care!

Hi,

I faced with the same problem about 4,5 months ago or even more. Since then, I've been trying to solve it but I've not found any advise that could help. It's just like: Safari on my iPhone has become nuts right after I installed new OS version. At first, I've been delighted to see these "feature" that allows to create special folders for different websites.

Then, after I've started to use it and sorted most of my opened websites, that's what started to happen: I close a website - Safari reopens it, I close it second time - Safari reopens it again, then I finally close it. Also, I've faced with insane tossing of websites. For example: 15-30 websites could just move from one folder into another...

What's important! I've never had this problem before iOS 15/ Last huge Safari update! Right now Safari just closed a dozen of websites that I had to use for studying and I don't have an idea how to open them back.

Clearing browser history or cash and cookies does not help!

I have the same issue. I thought it was maybe related to the private relay beta which I had active but after deactivating it, it's still a nightmare to use Safari on Mac. Tabs get closed, opened randomly or completely disappear. It gets even worse if I have multiple safari instances running at the same time and a website want's to open a new page in a new tab. Safari just opens new blank pages. Only if I close all safari instances besides of one the tabs get opened correctly (when they are not get closed by the other bug...).

Having the same issue on my iPhone - I recently updated to iOS 15.5 and I opened safari one day and all 300+ of my tabs were gone. Extremely upsetting and frustrating as I frequently open links to save for later. Now, a few days after that happened, I just opened safari again and the 10ish tabs I had open were gone. I’m not finding any solutions online except to check settings to make sure safari isn’t automatically closing tabs after a certain amount of time - when I check my settings, it was already set to manual. HELP!

i had this issue about 6 months ago only when i moved tabs to a new group. but when i installed the new update (v12.4) a tab will close on its own while safari is open, right after i click a link.

or when i try to close a tab it will close, then reopen for a second then close. or maybe not close. its very finnicy and little ryhme or reason.

also, i cant reopen tabs like i used to . the feature doesnt work . either they wont open at all or trying to open a previously closed tab via

histroy > reopen last closed tab>

will open a blank tab/the tab

for barely a second then remove it completely from the history

pls what is up apple?!!

(i only have one device on my icould as far as i know)

Hi Eric!

Thanks for reply. Yes, I use iCloud Tabs. And I have iMac, MacBook and iPhone. The problem occurs only on computers. iPhone safari works fine.

I understand what you mean, but iCloud Tabs is not the issue. It is not like this: I closed a tab on one device, and then the same tab suddenly closed on another. No.

Here's what happens: for example, my MacBook is turned off, the iPhone is aside. I only work on iMac. So no other device affects safari on iMac. And as I mentioned init first post If I open any tabs, safari closes them or reload. If I close tabs, safari will reopen them.

I forgot to mention one thing. When I open/close a tab, safari instantly closes/opens it. But when I open/close the tab for the second time, it stays and safari doesn't do anything with it.

I’ve had this issue for weeks it seems, I also noticed it happened after the updates.

It mostly happens on my ipad, and I constantly hunt for new updates (currently on 15.5) hoping for a fix. Its become extremely aggravating as a small business to do all my tasks on separate devices because the stupid browser closes the tabs I open 2 seconds into being open.

Cant believe there hasn’t been any serious progress into this.
