Google photos duplicating icloud preview photos

Hello all I have just move to Apple from android,

I have been moving years worth of Google Photos to Apple icloud the last few days using the web browser (thousands).

I have since found out that icloud is downloading these files locally to the iphone so they can be viewed, this causes Google Photos to reupload them as it thinks it s a new photo.

My problem is that on google photos I now have duplicates of photos. I have stopped using google photos to prevent them from doubling up.

This isn't an issue for new photos I take as it just puts a copy on each service.

Any help is appreciated.

Is it possible to use both without this occuring?

If you have Google photos set to upload any photos on your device, the duplicates will be created. The workaround is to turn off the Google photos upload setting. Add all of your pictures to iCloud, delete from Google photos. and then enable the Google photos sync.

I see, I thought that was a good idea as well;

If you don’t have enough local storage on your iPhone for all your photos in original resolution iCloud will store reduced quality images and google photos will end up backing those up rather than the original versions.

Yeah. that's one of the downsides of not having enough device storage.

You might want to consider other options, https://support.google.com/photos/answer/9845656?hl=en that might work for your situation.

Yeah, unfortunately there isn’t an iPhone that exists that has enough storage for all my photos, SD cards would be nice!

I’ll keep using google photos only

on my phone use google takeout and just backup to iCloud through the windows 11 app on pc.

Thank you for your help, much appreciated! Hopefully there is a solution in the future.
