Problems with access to iCloud and to Keychain on MacBook

I’m having problems accessing iCloud and Keychain on my Macbook Pro - (early 2015) MacOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6


A couple of days ago, the Apple Mail app was not receiving mail from my gmail account.  


Notification came up:



I go to iCloud Preferences - dialogue box tells me to enter the Apple ID password. 


Initially, I misread the instruction - thinking it wanted me to put in  the password for the gmail account (because the name of my Apple account is my gmail address), rather than for the Apple ID. I entered the wrong password at least twice.


After entering the correct Apple ID password, it tells me that “An unknown error has occurred.




During some attempts to access iCloud, it gives me a different message, telling me that the password is incorrect.  At this stage I am confident I have entered the correct password.


When I enter Keychain on my MacBook to double check password, it will not allow me access.




In fact, Keychain is preventing me accessing all entries.


In summary, I can’t access my iCloud account or my Keychain account.  I’m at a loss what to do.

Can anyone help me, please?

Sorry for the tardy response! I'm embarrassed to say that, as of last night, the problem appears to be totally sorted and without a single contribution from me!

I was still having the identified problems - and then Mac Mail also stopped working (a little squiggle symbol next to the Inbox). The advice that came up left me confused - it's an age thing! - but eventually I left-clicked on the squiggle and Mac Mail immediately started working again. That was yesterday. Today, I needed to get into Keychain and with no expectation of success, I tried - and got in! Feeling brave, I then tried getting into my iCloud account - and that worked too! Beyond having switched off and restarted the laptop, I've done nothing else. I have no idea if the range of issues were connected with each other.

Thank you anyway, balier for taking the time to respond to my initial request - and apologies for wasting your time.

If you visit the iCloud website, are you able to sign in there? iCloud Website


Additionally, are you able to sign into your Apple ID in a different user account? Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support
