Apple Pencil 2

Doesn’t seem to respond to pressure as it is supposed to do.

Hi All,

Turns out, after taking my pencil and pad to the Apple store, there was something corrupt or amiss in the iPad software and so a reset was done. (Those are definitely a PIA because it’s a lot of work to restore settings!) That seems to have worked and the Pencil 2 is working well now. Thanks again to those who responded—much appreciated, especially MichaelB2019.

Keep well!

Hi Desert Lady,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with your Apple Pencil 2. It sounds like it isn't working as expected by not responding to pressure.

Does the response issue continue when the pencil is full charged?

Have you tested it on the iPad without a screen protector or case?

Does it happen on all parts of the screen?

Is iPadOS updated to 15.3 in Settings > General > About?

Did you restart the iPad yet?

Let us know further details.

Have a fantastic day!

Hi Michael, thank you for responding!

Let me first say, I am very new to Apple products (Jan 2022), so while I had barely tried using the pencil for writing a note, or using it to navigate online, I had not done much in apps like Procreate and Ibis or the drawing apps available and it is with such apps that the pressure sensitivity is supposed to be a feature. I only realized something might be wrong because my granddaughter who was trying to show me what she can do with hers was not the same output as mine. Pressure on the nib when she used it caused the “ink” to thicken or thin as she applied or released pressure. On mine, with the same “brush” as hers using added pressure, the line would almost disappear whereas hers would sort of blob out and back as pressure was added or released. Then today I was playing around again and saw that with different brushes I could apply pressure and think I observed a little more responsiveness with some of them. (I have to spend a bunch more time than I have had, though to be sure.)

I actually have a web-ex session with Apple tomorrow to help acclimate me. I hope to bring up my issue then if appropriate, and then take it from there. Meanwhile, in answer to your questions:

I keep my iPad fully charged and so is the pencil always fully charged

I have the latest updates, as of yesterday

I do not have a screen protector, and use the Magic Keyboard at times, though tend to work on drawing apps just on my desk

The issue happened everywhere on the screen (i.e canvas) during the attempts I made

I restart the iPad daily, but also fiddled with various settings and rebooted while trying to debug my issue before coming here

I really appreciate your interest and will come back and let you know whatever I learn. Thanks!

Holly
