iPhone is recording video audio in Mono when using a Stereo microphone, why?

Hi, I'm using my iPhone 8 running iOS 15.2.1 to record video using my Blue Yeti USB microphone. To connect the mic to my iPhone, I'm using this Apple adapter: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter

The problem is that, even though I'm using the Stereo setting on the Blue Yeti mic, the audio is being recorded in or converted to Mono by the video camera app. When I import these video clips into Final Cut Pro, I can see that all the audio has been recorded in Mono instead of Stereo.

Is there some way to assure I get stereo audio when using my Blue Yeti mic to record video on my iPhone? Or does the iPhone video camera app only record in mono?

Hi Chuck,

I've already contacted Blue, they said to contact Apple because I've got everything set up correctly for recording stereo audio with the microphone, but the iPhone or the camera app is for some reason converting it to mono.

When I record video with the same iPhone using Filmic Pro, I get stereo audio. When I record video using the iPhone camera app, the audio is recorded in mono.

Thanks for providing those additional details.

Does that persist after updating your iPhone to iOS 15.3? Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

How about if you test your iPhone with another microphone?

You’ll want to reach out to Blue to get further support: Blue Microphones They would be in the best position to assist with troubleshooting their particular microphone.
