"System Data" Taking around 32GB of my 64GB iPhone XR

I restarted my phone, it's only 1 update away from the latest OS.

I doubt the OS version has to do with this, because people last year and even 2018 have had this problem.

Nothing seems to fix this. Any solutions Or points in the right direction would be good.

Its not storage corruption - almost every iOS update does this - its an iOS bug that Apple has been unable (or unwilling to prioritize) to fix. I had to backup, wipe and restore my phone to get the space back, and now with update 15.4 it did exactly the same again - I lost 20GB overnight! Can we not somehow escalate this to someone that can action a real resolution?

That looks like storage corruption, which can be caused by an interrupted sync.

To fix it, you need to reinstall iOS by restoring the phone to factory settings, then restoring a backup. Back up the phone first, of course:

  1. How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
  2. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support - follow the instructions to restore using your computer, do not using Settings/General/Reset (which is not included in those instructions)
  3. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

really? We have 4 iOS devices, all updated. One iPad has 250 MB, another 5 GB, an iPhone with ZERO, and another with 5 GB. So my survey shows NO iOS devices using large amounts of system data. Can you please provide a link to substantiate your claim that every iOS update does this?

I can guarantee you many have this issue. I end up having to factory reset my iPhone 11 after every update. I give the update at least a week to settle down, but the system data surges and uses over half of my device. My old backup iPhone 8 on 15.4 has absolutely nothing on it besides the main apple apps. I don't sync anything to that device. There is no SIM or rarely any use of the phone but I keep it updated. After 15.4 the system data now consumes 46 gbs out of the 64 gb device. This has been an issue for me on any device I have had since iOS 14 released, with many calls to support as well and absolutely no fix or explanation.

OK, support your guarantee of “many” with some evidence. How many? There are about 500 million iPhones that are eligible to update to iOS 15.4. What number out of those half billion phones would it take to reach “many”? The fact that your phone has this problem is not evidence of “many"; it is just evidence that there is something wrong with your phone.

Good question. I do however find it hard to believe that every phone I purchase has the same issue. I work with three people at a funeral home, two have iPhone 13's and one has an iPhone 13 Pro. System data is using half of their storage. So all of our devices have issues? I have at least 5 other friends with various iPhone models, especially XR's and 11's. All up to date, system data consuming over half of their storage as well. So this is a personal experience that I can verify. Seems like it's rather an iOS issue and not all based on a device issue itself.

I would also like to add that I won't claim to be all knowing. It's just very odd that my main phone actually stabilized and system data consumed a reasonable amount of space of about 7-8 gbs with 15.3 and 15.3.1. After 15.4 it's now sitting at 72.65 gbs of my 128 storage. I honestly cannot explain it.
