M1 Big Sur not mounting ANY external drives / SD media

From new, my M1 Macbook does not recognize any media - SD cards, SSD, external hard drives. I have to individually go to Disk Utility to mount each drive everytime. All work fine with my other macs on Big Sur and other OSX. So why is this?

What can I do? I don't have the option to reformat every external media before use as I am a video editor and you can't tell a client all their camera cards are no good because I am using the latest M1 laptops.

Hello WarrenStreet,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. Upon review of your post, it seems that you are unable to automatically mount multiple external storage devices on your Mac. We can see why you’d want this taken care of if you frequently work with these drives, so let us help from here! To start us off, we advise that you back up your Mac and update it to the latest macOS version, Monterey.

Once that has been completed, test to see if the issues with the drives persist. If they do, we suggest that you continue by testing to see when this behavior occurs.

First, put your Mac into safe mode and test. Booting into safe mode will disable any startup and login items from automatically opening, which can help us to isolate the source of the issue further. When you do this, you’ll see some unusual behavior from the display; this is to be expected. Please follow the steps in this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac.

Next, let's see if this behavior persists in a second user account on your Mac. Please follow these steps to make a test account that can be deleted later: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Please let us know how these tests go. We're here for you. Have a fantastic day!

Thank you for replying, but I need insight from someone who recognises this fault. I will not be doing the ":turn it off and turn it on again" school of answers to every fault. Let's be clear. This fault is from a brand new, out of the box M1. Nothing you suggest is logical considering this issue was from a factory set Macbook. Putting it back to start state does not make an sense. Secondly, I have an older Macbook that is serviceable but had some major issues with a Big Sur install - so bad that I bought a new M1 rather than waste any more days of my life trying to get my old macbook back to the reliable state it was under Catalina. So I do not see the sense in upgrading to Monterey to try and avoid the M1 issues that may or may not be OS related.
