Subscript and superscript on the fly in Pages

Pages version 11.2 (7032.0.145)

Os 12.2

I have an issue that is very annoying and time consuming to get around with, but I'm not sure if its user error, a bug or a wild goose chase.

I need to use subscript and superscript on the fly in text. For example in the following sentence i would like all the figures to be sub- or superscript (just an example, not relevant with my pattern of use).

"Hi, 1my 2name 3is 4Bill"

1) I could use the icon i have in the toolbar on top and write "Hi, " click on the toolbar, write 1 subscripted, click again on the toolbar to go back to normal, write "my " and repeat.

This is time consuming and extremely annoying.

2) I could use the functions in the format bar on the right with the small gear. Obviously it would also be overkill og time consuming.

3) I i have assigned F16 and F17 (magic keyboard) to "subscript" and "superscript" in keyboard options / app shortcuts. It does work as i want it to in Pages, but not consistently. I don't understand why it just stops working and sometimes just works again. By the way, native shortcuts shift&command&control&- and command&control&+ (and other i found around in the Internet) don't work, and they are anyways to complex for my intended use.

Long story short I wish to be able to activate / deactivate this function on the fly, consistently and with one keystroke. What could be the reason and how to fix my problem? I don't understand why it would be so difficult to have this working the same way as making elements cursive, bold and so on.

4) Edit:

While fickling around I seem to have found a workaround, which is create a character style either as subscripted / superscripted or based on fine tuned baseline shift in the "small gear" options. Still, not paramount as it now steals two style shorcuts (one to turn on and one to go back to "none"). This is a problem for me as the limit og 8 styles (which combines paragraph and character styles) is already way too small for me, only in paragraph styles i would gladly use 10/15. I mean why selling magic keyboards with 19 function keys and limit the style shortcuts to 8 in Pages? Like of the missing incremental zoom, sweet spot 175%, could it be an indicator that Pages-developers either want to prank the users, or don't even use their own program?

The Format menu > Text > Baseline keyboard shortcuts for Pages v11.2 subscript and superscript are wrong. I sent feedback about this last year and even though the product team reached out to me, and I explained this issue, they disengaged and it never was fixed.

Here are the current and tested shortcuts in Pages v11.2 on macOS 12.2, also shown in the Keyboard Shortcuts:

Let's say you want to subscript the numerals in the formula for Sulphuric acid:

  1. H2SO4 ➝ H₂SO₄
    1. Position the cursor behind the numeral 2 and press shift + left-arrow to select the 2, and then the above sequence for the subscript.
    2. Repeat the previous for the numeral 4.

It would be much handier if Pages permitted non-contiguous character selection so that one could select both numerals and subscript them both with one shortcut. That would be too easy…
